This video is set in present-day city in Asia. The characterization is a young Asian girl is deaf and somewhat shy; she doesn’t feel like she fits in with everyone else. The internal conflict us that the deaf girl feels like she doesn’t belong and wants to be more like everyone else. The external conflict is that the “normal” girl makes fun of a deaf girl trying to learn music. She thinks the deaf girl is being stupid and useless. The male violinist symbolizes what the girl hopes to be in the future. The protagonist is the deaf girl. The antagonist is the “normal” girl. The irony in this story occurs when the deaf girl blows everyone’s mind at the performance. She is the best violin player there. The climax happens when the announcer on stage declares that there is one more performance. And finally, the theme is: You can do anything that you set your mind to.
The Lyre bird is quite a gifted animal. I think it is amazing how the bird can imitate so many different sounds with such accuracy. When the bird began to make the noises of humans it caught me off guard though. Yes, at first, I thought maybe the people who made the video had just edited the sounds into it. It is crazy that the bird has heard those sounds so many times that it can imitate them perfectly. This shows how often humans are in contact with this creature, while taking pictures and cutting down trees. It is sad to realize that this bird is interfered with by humans so often. As a society, we only think about up-sizing and never the effects it has on the environment and wildlife surrounding us. If all Americans cared about the environment and actually believed that it should be preserved, things would be a lot different everywhere. Realistically, our nation would probably have not existed if we decided to never mess with wildlife. I guess the issue really comes down to this: Do you care more about the development and luxury of your life or the comfort and stability of nature?
Girls are portrayed as super thin and boys should be extremely muscular. At least, this is how the media makes people think. From the time we are young, everything around us tells us how we should look and what we should do. When a girl sees other girls who are very skinny and get lots of guys and attention, they assume that is how they have to look to be pretty and likeable. We also get an image in our heads from our families saying “Oh wow, you’re putting on some weight.” the day you start growing. Even if you are just naturally getting less thin because you are growing up and your metabolism is slowing down, people around you react instantly the second you start putting on pounds. It is a very negative thing, especially for children to be hearing from people who are supposed to be their support systems. We are all subjected to this. I can honestly say I’ve experienced the whole feeling of “maybe I should go to the gym more and eat less” because of what people have said to me since I’ve grown up and am not as stick thin as I was when I was 8.
I think it is such a terrible thing for people to be worrying about every day of their lives. Thankfully, the Dove campaign seems to be having a very positive effect on people. Their commercials just make people feel better about themselves and I think these commercials are a good thing to have around us today.
The music mainly set the mood for me. I kept expecting something to happen because of the eerie sound. The lesson is that if you keep wanting and wanting materialistic things instead of appreciating what you have for more than a few seconds, it will come back to haunt you. The girl kept drawing things that she wanted and only enjoyed them for ten seconds at the most before she decided she wanted something else.
Hmmmm….if i could have one of those pencils….first of all, I would carry it around places just to see people’s expressions when they looked at it. That would be amusing. I would probbably draw things that I needed and didn’t want to work for, like money and homework. However, I know I would use it for a new puppy and things like that as well. It is probably good that we don’t all have a huge pencil to carry around with us. If so, we would all be lazy and selfish.
You definitely can’t judge a book by its cover; I only got seven of the twenty people right. I thought I was doing a decent job identifying the races of the people but I was mistaken. I tried to use common facial features to decide what races the people were, but it didn’t help much. I believe everyone is judged and put into categories that they do not fit into, but that is how society is today. It is bad that everyone just decides to label someone without knowing anything about them. We should try to avoid stereotyping and get to know someone before we give them any type of label.
I usually enjoy reading. It seems like the only time I don’t is when I am forced to read a book I didn’t choose. This is why summer reading is always difficult for me. However, this year I have decided to stop procrastinating so much and just get it over with. I still have to do it whether I like it or not. I usually can only read at night, when everything is quiet and no one is awake, or when I’m alone. I am hoping to finish my summer reading before July, even though I am sure that won’t happen. It’s a good goal though. I think I will read McTeague first, because it is the longest. I’ll just work my way back from there.
I am very interested in blogging. I have never done so before. I think it will be a great learning experience for me and I look forward to it. I think this is a unique approach to the summer reading program.
